Rudbeckia breeding has come a long way since the introduction of ‘Goldsturm’ in 1937. If you still like the look of this broad-leaved cultivar but need a stronger performer for landscapes, consider the new Mega Millions™ Rudbeckia. Its habit is similar but it is an absolute blooming machine. In the breeder’s trials, one 3 year old Mega Millions plant produced over 1,000 more flowers than a 7 year old plant of ‘Goldsturm’ in a single season. Vernalization will help to bulk up the plants and flowering but is not required. Its broad, deep green leaves also stay cleaner due to better resistance to Septoria leaf spot. Mega Millions will stay where you plant it, so there won’t be any nuisance seedlings popping up all over the garden.
