Crimson Pygmy Barberry (Berberis thunbergii 'Atropurpurea Nana') is a compact, deciduous shrub featuring rich burgundy-red foliage that develops brighter crimson tones in autumn, with small, pale yellow spring flowers and a naturally dense, rounded habit. Thriving in full sun to partial shade with average, well-drained soil, this colorful shrub tolerates dry conditions once established and is well suited for low borders, foundation plantings, and landscape accents throughout central Illinois. Crimson Pygmy Barberry offers excellent cold hardiness, good deer resistance, and minimal pruning requirements, although its thorny branches and the invasive potential of Japanese barberry in Illinois should be considered when selecting a planting location.
